My Major: Life
Science
By: Thalia Maudina
I believed that life could
not be changed and would go to its fate. I ran my life without purpose. I felt
that I was not a special creature.
I am Thalia Maudina, Putera
Sampoerna Foundation scholar. I call myself a
scientist.
I did not enjoy music. Music
was disturbing my ears. I could not stand it. I totally disagreed that ‘Music is enjoyable’. My father
introduced me keyboard when I was 4.
Until I shifted to be an elementary student, I still could not love music.
I attended Music class at
school. A friend told me, ‘This is my passion.’ He showed his harmonica exactly
in front of my face. It sounded like he wanted me to do the same. Then,
something caught my eyes; an instrument called guitar. It hypnotised me by its sound. Its strings vibrated
beautifully.
I asked my father to buy me
guitar, ‘If you want it, you have to do
effort for it.’ Implicitly, my father wanted me to study guitar by myself. I
started to explore everything about guitar. I did different ways to learn. I
borrowed my classmate’s and neighbour’s guitar. I went to internet cafĂ© to
watch tutorials. I also asked my Music teacher and my friend to teach me.
I have learnt guitar since
2010. I am able to play guitar. I am a guitarist now. At the moment, I did not
think about having guitar because it was not important anymore. The priceless
thing is I could play it.
That experience prove that
W=P x t formulae is true. When we are doing our effort, we need power and time. We cannot get the best result instantly. We need to sacrifice either time or energy. My
Physics teacher, Mr. I Gede Suta Pinatih said, ‘Every single chance should be used wisely. We DO NOT HAVE TO think
about the result but we MUST give our best effort. So, Thalia, keep trying and
do your best in any opportunity. Effort is the way to pray to God!’ The
other thing to be underlined is something
that we think impossible can be possible. Therefore, fate can be changed.
Again, I am scientist; an expert who studies in one of the sciences. My major is Life Science; subject which never exist
in any university. I learn from people’s experiences; try to see from their
perspective.
Indonesia has its own history. I cannot reorganise
memories but I can change the fate. Indonesia can be better if there is someone
who initiates to modify. My country
has much potential yet people do not use it wisely. Because of that, I am going
to be the one who makes Indonesia becomes the most suitable techno-country to be placed.
I am going to take Engineering so that I can
accomplish my desire. Engineering is really related with my purpose. Besides
that, going abroad will lead me to have innovative ideas that make my country
known as developed country. That is why I choose this way.

Well, I used to use this essay for requirement of Singapore Scholarship Recruitment when I was in Senior High School, SMA Sampoerna.
